Chapter Sixteen

Morganna

I follow Shax back into his room. The meeting with Lucifer didn’t go as they planned. I could’ve told them that. They’re asking permission from the wrong person. Part of me thought that Lucifer would forget about me and would give his permission. Then Azo and him would have to fight that out amongst themselves, of course I should’ve known better. Lucifer remembers everything. It might take a minute but he will never forget about any of his subjects, past or present.

After the meeting, Caym told Shax that he would do whatever he could to make sure that I stay. They have to find something that Azo wants more. Azo covets his subjects, so it’s difficult to make him want anything else. It’ll be even more difficult for me because he believes I have something of his that he’s never had before.

I chew on my lip and stare out the window. I don’t know how I got myself in this situation and I swear if I could change it I would.

“What’s the problem?” Shax asks from behind me. He’s still upset that the meeting didn’t end in a solid resolution but I know he won’t stop trying. Caym is going to keep fighting to keep me here until he knows I’ll be able to stay.

“No problem,” I reply, but I don’t turn to look at him. I know he knows I’m lying. I can feel it. This shit is weird. The connection Tetra was trying to get me to feel before only seemed to get stronger the second Shax said I was his mate.

“I don’t have time for the lies, tell me what’s going on.” Shax comes over to me and turns me around so that I’m facing him.

“What happens now? What if you can’t find anything better for Azo? How do we win?”

He lets out a sigh and kisses my head before he moves back to the other side of the room.

“We will, I’m sure we will, but if we don’t then we will have to fight,” he says completely nonchalantly, as if it isn’t a big deal.

“What? Do you mean like Azo himself? You want to fight him?” I know he’d fight to keep me. I didn’t think that meant he would try to take on a devil!

“Yes, if I die then it’s my time. You’re the only thing that’s important. I’ll give my life to keep you safe, you’re all that matters.”

No! No, I’m not!

Panic fills my head as I realize that I have to tell him, and he may kill me for it. I have to tell him what I’ve been hiding. He can’t sacrifice himself because he needs to be around to protect his heir. Shax is going to be a father.

“You can’t.” I start to cry again and I rush over to him trying to find the best way to tell him. “Promise me you won’t sacrifice yourself.”

He holds onto my arms and tries to pull me back, obviously confused by my surge of emotions.
